HAscreening and diagnostic method   b-out   d-out   qh
SN This section contains specific methods, instruments, tests, etc., used in screening, identification, and diagnosis. For descriptors dealing with the process and other aspects of screening, identification, and diagnosis, see *+JG26 identification and screening* qh ah. These descriptors refer to the methods themselves as well as the results or scores obtained using them.
Screening is the preliminary identification of a disease or defect by means of tests, examinations, or other procedures that can be applied rapidly. Diagnosis is the definitive determination of the nature or identity of a disease, typically based on an analysis of signs and symptoms, the patient's medical history, and often on the results of laboratory tests. Screening and diagnosis often employ similar methods.
This section first gives medical diagnostic methods and techniques that are defined according to the physical, chemical, or biological methods used. It next gives diagnostic methods defined according to the specific body systems, organs, or parts to which they are applied. It concludes with psychological tests.

SN Use this term when biological markers and/or their use in diagnosis are discussed.
A biological marker is a biological compound or attribute that provides evidence of the presence of, or the vulnerability to, a specific disorder. In general, two types of markers are distinguished: state markers and trait markers. A state marker identifies a current abnormality that most typically reflects a transient or reactive condition of the subject, such as the degree of activity of an underlying disorder or the recent use of a drug. A trait marker identifies a relatively stable and enduring attribute that reflects a continuing condition or, particularly in the case of a genetic marker, a predisposition to a specific disorder.
Most biological markers for alcohol and other drugs are state markers, and many simply reflect recent consumption history. Many, but not all, state markers for alcohol are in fact tests of hepatic damage (such as elevated plasma GGT). They are diagnostic tests of alterations in liver status that are secondary to chronic drinking and not valid indicators of alcohol dependence (WHO lexicon).

SN Inherited characteristics, such as differences in DNA segments or in protein molecules, which occur with a disease such as alcoholism more frequently than chance would indicate. A marker that is known to occupy a particular place on a chromosome can be a gene or may be derived from a region of the genome that does not produce a functional product. If a marker gene is located on the chromosome and in proximity to the gene or genes responsible for a particular disease, then the marker and the disease genes are considered to be linked.
